What is Microchipping? Does My Pet Need it?
A microchip is a permanent pet identifier which is used to quickly identify lost pets and reunite them with their owners. It is a small, sterile transponder that contains a unique ID code. The microchip’s material is extremely safe. The microchip is injected into your pet and is good for the life of your pet.
Although many pets are microchipped at the time of a spay or neuter, anesthesia is not needed. A microchip can be implanted during any routine visit. After it is implanted, you enroll the microchipped pet into a nationwide registry. The database is maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your pet is lost, the microchip can be read by a scanner (thousands of veterinarians, animal shelters, and animal control agencies have scanners and routinely scan found pets). When a microchip is found, the registry is contacted to get the pet’s information.
